We have all heard about Facebook and almost everybody we know have a Facebook account and spend hours on the computer chatting or playing games. I joined Facebook a couple of years ago but when I first wanted to join had no idea how it worked, how to create an account or what exactly Facebook was. Well, I have done research, asked friends and am finally on Facebook talking to my friends on a daily basis. Allow me to explain to you exactly how it all works.

I will talk about the following with regards to Facebook:

  • What is Facebook
  • How to create an account
  • How to log in
  • How to use Facebook

What is Facebook?

A Harvard student by the name of Marc Zuckerberg founded the social network called Facebook back in 2004 and Facebook today is the biggest social network site. Facebook is used to find and stay in touch with friends, family and work colleagues. I personally have found most of my friends I went to school with and it is wonderful to see what they have been up to since school with most of them being married with kids, the careers paths they have chosen and so forth.

You create something called a profile page on which you will put all your information which everybody will be able to see. Don’t worry, if you want only your friends to see your personal information, there is a setting you can select which will allow only the people you have accepted as friends to see the personal information about you.
You can find your friends by simply typing in their names or email address or even the name of the university they attended in the block provided.

A popular feature of Facebook is the ability to upload photos for all your friends to see. It can be uploaded from a camera, a cell phone or a hard drive.
You can share just about everything with your friends, even videos. You can also add your hobbies, what type of music, television programs, sport and movies you like. This will all be added to your profile page. You can even reveal whether you are married, single, dating and so forth.

How to create an account

To follow is the step by step instructions you need to follow to successfully create a Facebook account allowing you to join one of the biggest social networks.

  • Go to the website and once the page opens you will see a ‘sign up’ screen on the top right hand side of the page. There you will be asked information like your name, surname, gender and e-mail address. If you do not have an e-mail address you can get one free from or Once all your information has been entered click on ‘sign up’.

  • You will now be asked to verify and type into the text block provided a couple of letters or words and click on ‘sign up’ again.

  • Next you will receive an e-mail from Facebook with a link that you need to click on. This is just to verify that you did indeed register for a free Facebook account. The link will open the Facebook page where you will see a block in which you need to type your e-mail address and next to that another block in which you need to type your password. Click on ‘login’ and there you have it, you are now logged into Facebook.

  • Invite your friends by typing in their names in a block provided, which will be at the top of the screen. Once you click on the name, that persons’ page will open. On the right hand side you will see a ‘add as a friend’ sign. Click on this sign and a friend request will be sent to that person inviting him or her to accept you as a friend.

You will quickly see how easy it actually is to operate and enjoy Facebook.

How to use Facebook

Facebook has really taken the world by storm and apart from just inviting your friends to accept you as a friend allowing you to talk to or send them a message there are other functions as well. When it is any of your friends’ birthdays, providing they added their birthday to their profile, you will receive a notification informing you of their birthday on the specific day. Chat to your friends while they are online. A list of people who are currently online will appear at the bottom right hand side of the page. If there is a green dot next to the name that means that they are currently on Facebook.
